Travel Smarter:  Meet Alison the Agent that Handles the Stress and Cares What Matters to You

I used to think booking hotels and flights myself was enough. After all, I can research destinations online. Why add another person’s opinions to the mix? If that sounds like you, read on, because what I learned might change the way you travel.

The Search

In early 2023, I was planning a trip to celebrate my wife’s 50th birthday. Our favorite resort, the Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya (VIM), felt like the natural choice since we’d been there twice before. But when I checked prices, I got sticker shock. The same swim-up room we had booked the year before was now $2,000 more.

I turned to a couple of VIM-focused Facebook groups, hoping for alternatives. Every time someone asked, “Where can I go that’s as good as VIM without breaking the bank?” the most common response was, “Talk to a travel agent.” I’d always dismissed those suggestions, I thought agents were unnecessary for me. But with prices climbing, I decided it was time to see what they could do.

I wrote down the names of two agents who came up often in the group, plus one more who stood out for a different reason. In my original post, I had asked three specific questions. Of all the people who replied, only one person, this third agent, took the time to answer every single question. That kind of attention to detail is rare online, and it got my attention. Her name was Alison Tracy.

To keep things fair, I emailed all three agents the same email explaining my goal and reasons for planning a trip. The results couldn’t have been more different. One sent me a generic screenshot of a pricing website with a note that said, “Here’s some options.” Another never replied at all. And then there was Alison: she acknowledged the crazy pricing, told me a bit about herself, and suggested a phone call to learn more about what we wanted. She even gave me specific times she was available.

That response checked every box for me: professional, personal, and proactive. I knew right then that I had found someone worth working with.

Why a travel agent?

  • Time and Stress Reduction
A travel agent does the digging, comparing, and planning for you. That saves hours of hunting online and helps avoid rookie mistakes like misconnecting flights or booking hotels in the wrong part of town.
  • Personalized Service
Agents get to know your travel style, budget, comfort level, pace, and must-haves. Instead of generic suggestions, they tailor itineraries to you. Think: avoiding red-eye flights if you hate them, or finding hotels with actual walkable neighborhoods instead of highway exits.
  • Problem Solving When Things Go Wrong
Flights get canceled, tours reschedule, luggage goes missing. A good agent acts as your advocate, calling airlines, hotels, and tour companies on your behalf. That means you’re not the one on hold with an airline while stuck at the gate.
Note:  This has been huge for me.  I experience a lot of anxiety on travel days, not because I’m scared to fly (I love flying) but because one of my biggest fears is missing a flight or having a flight cancelled and all the headache that goes along with getting that resolved.
  • Access to Perks and Insider Deals
Agents sometimes get upgrades, early check-in, resort credits, or package pricing that isn’t listed online. They also know which promotions are fluff and which are actually worth it.
Note:  I experienced this first hand with Ali when I booked a cruise through her and received on-board credit from both the cruise line and her agency.
  • Expert Knowledge
They’ve usually traveled extensively themselves or have client feedback. That translates into insights like which connecting airport is a nightmare, which tour companies actually deliver, or which destinations are overhyped.
  • Accountability
If you book through random sites online and something’s off, you’re on your own. With an agent, you have a single point of contact who’s invested in making sure your trip works out so you’ll come back next time.
  • It Usually Costs You Nothing
Most travel agents don’t charge travelers directly. They get paid by hotels, airlines, and tour operators when they book your trip. That means you often get expert help, personalized service, and support in case of problems without paying extra.

What Sets Ali Apart

From the very first call, Alison showed me what working with a great travel agent looks like. She walked me through her process step by step, what she could do before, during, and after a trip—and made it clear that she wasn’t just about booking hotels and flights. She was about making the whole experience smoother.

What impressed me most was her flexibility and communication. When I had to reschedule our first call because of a last-minute work conflict, she adjusted without hesitation. When I asked questions, she listened carefully and gave clear, useful answers. That level of service stood out compared to the “copy-paste” responses I had gotten from others.

Our first trip booked through her was to the Dominican Republic, and everything went off without a hitch. Since then, I’ve booked multiple vacations with Alison, and each one has reinforced what I saw in that first interaction: she’s reliable, detail-oriented, and always looking out for her clients.
