I absolutely love a good road trip but, one of the hardest parts of a road trip is balancing the driving, the navigating, and trying to figure out what you’re actually looking at along the way. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve thought, “I wish I knew the story behind that mountain or landmark” as we zipped past.
A few years ago, I stumbled on something that completely solved that problem: GuideAlong.
What is GuideAlong?
GuideAlong is a smartphone app that delivers GPS-triggered audio tours. Think of it like having a knowledgeable local guide in the passenger seat, pointing out sights, telling stories, and giving tips as you drive.
The app works on both iOS and Android, and you buy tours individually for the destinations you’re visiting. There are tours for National Parks, scenic drives, and even entire regions like Hawaii and the Canadian Rockies.
Fun fact: when I first discovered the company several years ago, it was called GyPSy Guides. Even then, the idea was clever and unique. The new name, GuideAlong, fits perfectly because that’s exactly what the app does, it guides you along your journey.
How It Works
Using GuideAlong is straightforward:
- Download the app and purchase the tour you want before your trip.
- Save it offline so you don’t need cell service once you hit the road.
- Plug your phone into your car stereo (or just play it from your phone speakers).
- Drive. The narration automatically starts when you reach certain points, so you hear about what’s around you in real time.
It was surprisingly seamless. No fiddling with buttons, no rewinding, just driving and listening.
Our First Experience
Our very first experience with GuideAlong (back when it was GyPSy Guides) was on a family trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. That drive can be overwhelming, you’re trying to spot wildlife, keep track of scenic pullouts, and not miss important landmarks.
On that trip it was me, my wife, and our two sons, who were 17 and 15 at the time. GuideAlong made it entertaining and educational for all of us. The narrator told us where to stop, which trails were worth the time, and even where the best bathrooms were (which is priceless on a long drive). We got so comfortable with his voice that we ended up giving him a name: Dave.
“Dave” quickly became part of the family on road trips. He wasn’t just feeding us facts, he had a friendly tone that made it feel like we were traveling with a really knowledgeable friend who just happened to know the backstory of every single mountain, valley, and historic landmark.
Years of Use
Since that Yellowstone trip, we’ve purchased several more GuideAlong tours. At first, we used them mainly for family vacations, but over time we started branching out to trips with friends too.
One of our favorites was a long weekend couples trip up to Michigan’s wine country. We followed the M-22 Lakeshore and Sleeping Bear Dunes tour, with Dave guiding us along the way. It made the drive between tastings and small towns more fun. Often, Dave, our “fifth wheel” was the most helpful one in the car.
Whether it’s a National Park adventure with the kids or a relaxing weekend getaway with friends, GuideAlong has added a layer of storytelling and discovery that makes every trip feel richer.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Very affordable (usually $10-$20 per tour).
- Works offline, perfect for areas without cell service.
- Flexible, you control the pace, stops, and timing.
- Covers a wide range of National Parks and road trip destinations.
- Full of practical tips (bathroom breaks, hikes, photo stops).
Cons
- Limited destinations (not everywhere has a tour yet).
- No interactive Q&A like a live guide.
- Works best if you’re driving, not as useful if you’re just walking or staying in one spot.
Who It’s Best For
GuideAlong is perfect for:
- Road trippers who want more than just scenery.
- Families looking for an educational yet entertaining car ride.
- Travelers who prefer to go at their own pace instead of joining group tours.
Is It Worth It?
For us, absolutely. A single $15 purchase gave us hours of storytelling, history, and insider tips. Compared to the cost of a guided tour, it’s a bargain. And since one purchase covers everyone in your car, the value multiplies if you’re traveling as a group.
Owning several tours now, I can confidently say the consistency and quality keep us coming back. Honestly, I can’t imagine a big road trip without “Dave” along for the ride.

Final Thoughts
If you’re planning a road trip, I can’t recommend GuideAlong enough. It turns an ordinary drive into a rich experience, helping you see the landscape in a whole new way.
From our very first experience in Yellowstone and Grand Teton years ago to the multiple tours we own today, GuideAlong (and “Dave”) have become part of how we travel.
Next time you head to a National Park or scenic route, download GuideAlong, you might just find yourself giving your narrator a name too.
